Adam Foote has filled out the staff for his rookie season leading an NHL bench.
The Vancouver Canucks head coach hired Kevin Dean, Brett McLean, Scott Young as assistants, the team announced on Thursday.
Meanwhile, assistant Yogi Svejkovský, defensive development coach Sergei Gonchar and video coach Dylan Crawford will not return to the club.
General manager Patrik Allvin said the Canucks underwent a “thorough” search to round out Foote’s bench.
“Once Adam was hired, we set out on selecting a team of assistant coaches who are good teachers, good communicators, and good people. Footey has done a great job in assembling a well-rounded staff with a strong mix of experience and position specific expertise,” Allvin said.
“I am excited to watch this group come together and am ready to support them in every way I can to help them prepare for the upcoming season.”
Dean, 56, spent the past three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks as an assistant coach with a focus on defencemen. The Madison, Wisc., native was also on the bench of the U.S. team that won gold at the most recent world championship.
McLean, the 46-year-old from Comox, B.C., spent the past two seasons leading the Minnesota Wild’s AHL affiliate Iowa Wild. He previously spent three seasons as an assistant with the big-league club.
Young, 57, moves down to the bench after three seasons as Vancouver’s director of player personnel. The two-time Stanley Cup Champion (1991 with Pittsburgh, 1996 with Colorado) and 17-year NHL veteran will be making his NHL debut behind a bench. He was an assistant for Team USA at the 2018 Olympics.
“Putting this staff together was an enjoyable process and a rewarding experience,” Foote said. “I talked to a lot of great hockey people and formed many important relationships. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to help me through this exercise. The group that we have brought together is a great mix of hockey people.”
Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, Marko Torenius and Jason Krog will continue in their current roles, the Canucks added.
