After six outings, the José Ureña experience has come to a close in Toronto.
Ureña, who was designated for assignment on May 31, cleared waivers Monday and elected free agency.
The 33-year-old right-hander was signed by the Blue Jays on a one-year deal in early May to help cover innings in Max Scherzer’s absence.
Over his six appearances — two of which were starts — Ureña threw 12.1 innings, struck out five and posted a 3.65 ERA.
A veteran of 11 MLB seasons, Ureña will now hit the free agent market once again in hopes of finding a big-league home with a third team this year. Before landing with the Blue Jays in 2025, the six-foot-two righty made one appearance with the New York Mets.
Toronto’s need for help in the fifth starter’s spot has been spread to many pitchers since Scherzer went down with a thumb injury, but with the return of Erik Swanson and the presence of bulk relievers Eric Lauer and Paxton Schultz on the Blue Jays’ 26-man roster, Ureña was unable to survive the roster shuffle.
