Blue Jays place Anthony Santander on injured list, recall Alan Roden

Santander was placed on the 10-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation on Friday, the team announced.

Replacing him on Toronto’s roster is outfielder Alan Roden, who was recalled from triple-A Buffalo. He’ll be active for Friday’s game against the Athletics.

Santander has dealt with shoulder and hip issues for the better part of a month, missing a handful of games. However, this is the first time he’s been placed on the injured list.

The slugger suffered the shoulder injury during the Blue Jays’ series against the Los Angeles Angels in early May after crashing into the stands down the right-field line while pursuing a fly ball.

It is unclear whether that is directly related to his placement on the IL.

Santander, 30, has struggled in his first season with the Jays since signing a five-year, $92.5 million deal in free agency.

Over 50 games, he’s batting .179 with a .577 OPS and six home runs. He has a team-worst 55 strikeouts.

Roden, 25, started the season on the MLB roster but was sent down to Buffalo in early May after batting .178 with a .522 OPS and one home run.

The Blue Jays are set to take on the Athletics on Friday in Game 2 of their four-game weekend series, with first pitch at 7:07 p.m. ET / 4:07 p.m. PT. Catch the action on Sportsnet ONE or stream on Sportsnet+.
